Pasifika Council Fono – Term 2
On Thursday 21 May, the Pasifika Council hosted their second fono that brought together students, whānau, and staff for an evening of connection, culture, and celebration. Led by senior council members Mele Manuatu 13K12, Herriot Porter 13K12, and Travis Davies Faleuka 12J11, the event highlighted the importance of Pasifika identity and student success.
The evening began with warm Pacific greetings and an energetic icebreaker. Teams were given a random word—such as “because”—and challenged to sing a song that included it. Laughter filled the room as groups worked together, while those unable to think of a song were eliminated.
Senior council members then shared their experiences from the Young, Free & Pacific conference, held on Wednesday 20 May for young men and Thursday 21 May for young women. They described it as an inspiring event where Pasifika youth came together to celebrate identity, build leadership, and learn that their voices matter.
Students reflected on how the conference aligned with our theme “Our Culture, Our Strength, Our Success,” showing how embracing culture builds confidence and supports achievement.
Following dinner, the council presented opportunities for Pasifika students, including the Samoan Speech Competition and information about scholarships to support future education pathways.
Overall, the Pasifika Fono was a successful student-led evening that showcased student leadership and welcomed our Pasifika community.
